Spinal Cord Rehabilitation

Every spinal cord injury is unique, and so are our patients. Our Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Program focuses on your special needs in order to restore and maximize your abilities.

Who Receives Rehabilitation?

The Spinal Cord Injury Program provides care for those who have experienced:

  • Spinal cord injury or tumors
  • Stroke in the spinal cord or the arteries that supply it
  • Weakness or paralysis of the arms, legs, trunk, lower limbs, or one side of the body

What Skills Are Addressed?

We’ll help you learn or relearn the skills you need to face challenges common to spinal cord injuries. These may include:

  • Activities of daily living
  • Mobility, including how to use special equipment like wheelchairs
  • Bowel/bladder functioning
  • Breathing, eating, swallowing
  • Safety issues
  • Medical management
  • Other thinking, social, emotional, and physical skills
  • Education for you and your caregivers

What You Can Expect

Rehabilitation begins after your initial treatment in the hospital. You may be recommended for inpatient rehabilitation, an intensive recovery program that takes place at the hospital. When you’re ready to leave the hospital, we’ll help you prepare for the adjustment and reestablishment of life at home, school, work, and in the community. Our focus is on maximizing your health and level of activity for a safe return to life outside the hospital, and participation in the community. And we’ll connect you with other treatment opportunities, therapy, and community resources. Our spinal cord support group will help you learn from others who share your challenges.

Outpatient Neuro Rehabilitation Program

Our Outpatient Neuro Rehabilitation Program helps you transition from the hospital to daily living within the community.

A Physician Order Is Not Required

The state of Ohio Physical Therapy Practice Act and Premier Health both allow patients to be seen via Direct Access. That means no physician order is required.

However, some insurance companies require a physician order, so check with your insurance plan or ask our team to assist you.
