Minimally Invasive Procedures

In some cases, minimally invasive surgical options, including arthroscopy, may be available. Such options enable your surgeon to inspect, diagnose and repair problems inside your elbow or shoulder with just a few small incisions.

In these procedures your surgeon inserts a tiny camera, called an arthroscope, into your elbow or shoulder through a small incision. The camera displays pictures on a television screen, and your surgeon uses these images to guide surgical instruments through other small incisions to make the necessary repairs.

Minimally invasive procedures typically have important benefits:

  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss

Elbow Replacement

If your elbow joint is badly damaged, your physician may recommend a joint replacement. In this procedure, your surgeon will replace the damaged bones of the elbow with an artificial elbow joint made of metal and plastic.

Elbow joint replacement may make it possible for you to resume normal activities after your elbow has healed.

Shoulder Replacement

In some instances, a partial, total, or reverse shoulder replacement may be recommended. Learn more.
